HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College men's basketball team was unable to hang onto their late game lead as they fell to the Dordt Defenders 70-68 during GPAC play on Saturday evening.
The Broncos came out the gate and quickly going on a 6-2 run to start the game after a basket by Mason Hiemstra (FR/Alliance , NE). After a steal by Karson Gansebom (FR/Bennington, NE), he would find Brendan Lipovsky (SR/Fairfield, NE) to put the Broncos up 15-12 halfway through the first half. The Defenders would find themselves getting hot from the floor as they would hit back-to-back three pointers to pushing the lead to nine as the Broncos would trail 31-22 with 4:48 left in the first half. The Broncos would battle back and after a pair of free throws from Lipovsky, the Broncos would go into half trailing 38-34.
Coming out of halftime, the Broncos would quickly tie up the ball game with baskets by Lipovsky and Bart Hiscock (SR/Bennington, NE) to make the score 38-38 with 17:25 left in the game. The Defenders would go 5:51 into the game before making a basket in the second half. In the meantime, the Broncos would go on a 9-point swing to take a five-point lead with a basket by Ryan Ierna (SR/Clearwater, FL) with 14:18 left in the game. The Broncos would build their lead up to six points after a pair of free throws made by Logan Cale (SR/Lincoln, NE) gave the Broncos a 49-43 lead with 10:39 left in the game.
The Defenders would fight their way back into the game and would go back and forth with the Broncos as the game clock would continue to count down. Three pointer by Cale with 6:42 left in the game would tie the game for the fifth time at 58-58. A pair of free throws by Lipovsky would give the Broncos a 64-60 lead with 4:07 left. The Defenders would tie the game 66-66 with just 1:20 left in the game after a Bronco turnover. The Defenders would hold on after a pair of free throws by both team to win 70-68.
Lipovsky led the Broncos as he tied his career high with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting and picked up seven rebounds as well. Cale would pick up 13 points on the night. Hiscock finished with a double-double as he had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Ierna and Hiemstra both added six points. The Defenders won the rebounding battle 41-to-34.
Hastings falls to 6-6 (1-5) on the year and will be back in action next Monday Dec. 16 as the Broncos go on the road to take on University of Nebraska-Kearney in exhibition action with tip-off set for 5:00 p.m. CT
