Broncos advance to GPAC semifinals with blowout win over Jamestown
The No. 4-ranked Hastings College Lady Broncos advance to the GPAC Quarterfinals with a 77-49 home win over University of Jamestown on Wednesday Night. Hastings will host #8 Morningside College on Saturday for a chance to move on to the GPAC Finals.
Coming out the gate, the Jimmies would score the first basket to take the early 2-0 lead, which would be the only lead for them in the game as the Kaitlyn Schmidt would drain a three-pointer to give the Lady Broncos the lead. Taylor Beacom (SO/Papillion, NE) would drain a three with just under four-minutes left in the first quarter to extend the Lady Bronco lead to double digits, leading 16-6. An 8-2 run capped off by a pair of free throws gave Hastings a 16-point with under two minutes to play in the first. After a late basket by the Jimmies, HC would end the quarter leading 24-10.
The Lady Broncos would start off the second quarter, Schmidt would drain a three-point to cap off a 9-3 run to give her team a 20-point lead over the Jimmies. For the rest of the half both teams would trade baskets as the final point of the half would come from a free throw by Ali Smith (SO/Ord, NE) as the Lady Broncos went into halftime leading 38-19.
Sophia Pankratz (SR/Hastings, NE) would open up the second half with a three-pointer of her own and Gabby Grasso (SR/Omaha, NE) would add a basket of her own to push the Lady Bronco lead to 43-19. A three-point basket by Jamestown would cut the lead to 18 with just 4:34 left in the third before Hastings would put together another big 9-0 run to push the lead to 55-28. The Lady Broncos would push the lead up 30 before the Jimmies would cut into the lead a bit as the teams headed into the fourth quarter HC leading 62-36.
Grasso would score the opening basket to start the fourth and then would get the steal and find Emma Grenfell (SR/York, NE) for the easy basket to extend the Lady Bronco lead back to 30. Jamesotwn would cut into the Hastings lead with a 9-2 run of their own as they still trailed 68-45. Schmidt would then respond with a three to push the lead to 71-45 with 4:57 left in the game. The Lady Broncos would go on to win by 28, taking the game 77-49 over the Jimmies.
Pankratz would go on to lead the Lady Broncos with 20 points on the night, shooting 4-for-6 from the field while also going 10-for-12 at the free throw line. Schmit and Grenfell would both finish with 15 points, as Schmit went 6-for-11 from the field and grabbing five rebounds. Grenfell went a perfect 6-for-6 on the night while adding four assist and leading the team with four steals as well. Grasso finished with 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting, and led the team with six rebounds. Shandra Farmer (SR/Hastings, NE) played a more supportive role as she finished with six points, three steals, and led the team with five assist. Coming off the bench, Beacom added eight points of her own.
Hastings will return to the floor on Feb. 29th when they will host to #8 Morningside in the GPAC Semifinals. Tip off set for 3:00 p.m. CT at Lynn Farrell Arena.
