HASITNGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College women's basketball team played lights out with their Great Plains Athletic Conference action by defeating College of Saint Mary 104-53 Wednesday night as the Lady Broncos hosted the Flames at Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Broncos limited the Flames to just 31 percent shooting while forcing 23 turnovers, 14 coming from steals. Hastings shot 53 percent from the floor. Emma Grenfell (SR/York, NE) led the way with four of those steals.
Hastings opened up a big lead early as Shandra Farmer (SR/Hastings, NE) got things going with a three of her own, to spark an 8-0 run after a basket by Gabby Grasso (SR/Omaha, NE) would make it 10-2. With just 2:48 left in the first, Taylor Beacom (SO/Papillion, NE) would drain a 3-pointer to extend the Lady Broncos lead to 10. Back-to-back baskets by Ali Smith (SO/Ord, NE) and Grenfell would give the Lady Broncos a 25-11 lead with 1:59 left in the quarter. With :29 seconds left in the game, Farmer would hit a three pointer and fellow Lady Bronco Sophia Pankratz (SR/Hastings, NE) would nail a three pointer of her own with just 3 seconds left in the quarter.
The Lady Broncos continue their offensive performance in the second quarter as a basket by Beacom would give the Lady Broncos a 43-19 lead with just under six minutes left in the half. The Lady Broncos would go into halftime shooting 59 percent and take a 58-32 lead over the Flames with three players tied with 12 points each.
The Lady Broncos continued to shine in the third quarter and was able to push their lead over 50-points with a pair of free throws made by Kelsie Zadina (SO/Seward, NE) gave the Lady Broncos an 88-37 lead with just :10 seconds left in the quarter.
College of Saint Mary never could stop and recovered as the Lady Broncos built the lead to as many as 55 points before taking the win by 51, even after shooting 35 percent in the fourth quarter.
Pankratz had herself a night and best game of this young season scoring an almost career high 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting while also recording her third career double-double with career high thirteen rebounds. Farmer and Beacom both had 14 points of their own and combined 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Smith finished the game with 12 point on 3-for-5 shooting, and Pankratz picked up 11 points if her own.
Hastings also won the rebounding battle 44-to-29.
Hastings improves to 11-0 (5-0) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Dec. 7 as the Lady Broncos travel to take on Northwestern with tip-off set for 1:00 p.m.
