Broncos upset #17 Mount Marty in blowout, 87-70

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College men's basketball team returned to action and was able to upset #17 Mount Marty 87-70 on Sunday evening. Brendan Lipovsky (SR/Fairfield, NE) and Mason Hiemstra (FR/Alliance , NE) both have set their new career high in today's game

The Broncos wasted no time getting on the board as Bart Hiscock (SR/Bennington, NE) would drain a three-pointer to open up the game. HC would quickly take a 13-2 lead to start off the game with Lipovsky leading the way. The Lancers would battle back and cut the Hastings lead to just three, halfway through the first half. HC would answer right back with three straight three-pointers coming from Shane Chamberlain (SO/Harlan, IA), Logan Cale (SR/Lincoln, NE), and Hiemstra to boost the lead back up to double digits.

Both teams would clash it out for a bit before heading into halftime leading 40-26 over the Lancers.

The Broncos would come out of halftime looking to extend their lead on the Lancers as Lipovsky would open the half with a three-pointer to push their lead up to 17. Mount Marty would find a way to dig themselves out of the big lead and cut the lead to just five as they trailed HC 51-46. The Broncos would slowly build their lead back to double digits with the help of an 8-0 run. They wouldn't stop just there, as the Broncos would build inflate their lead all the way up to 28 after Hiemstra made a pair of free throws to give his team 85-57 lead with 4:24 left in the game. Mount Marty would manage to reduce the lead just a bit before falling the Broncos 87-70.

When the dust settled, three Broncos finished in double-digits in scoring. Leading the Broncos, Lipovsky had himself a day as he set his career high of 34 points on 13-for-22 shooting including making eight three-pointers. Hiemstra would also find himself setting a career high with 20 points on 6-for-13 shooting. He would pick up a double-double as he grabbed down 12 rebounds and dished out four assist. Hiemstra would also go a perfect 7-7 at the free throw line. Hiscock would add 15 of his own on 6-for-11 from the field and added 10 rebounds to give himself his 9th double-double of the season.

The Broncos won the rebound battle, 44-38.

Hastings improves to 11-10 (4-7) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Jan. 22 as the Broncos will be back on the road as they take on No. 10 Dakota Wesleyan University with a tip-off set for 8:00 p.m. CST.
