HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College men's basketball team picked up their first win of the new season. Hastings hosted (23) Friends University as they defeated the Falcons 87-76 Friday night to open the season.
Last season, Hastings was struggled to contain Senior Jordan Murdock allowing him to put up a game high of 32 points to lead the Falcons to the win. Now without Murdock, the Falcons struggled to get their offense going, shooting only 38 percent from the field.
The Broncos had no problem getting going in the first half, as they found themselves with an early 13-7 lead, with the help from a huge dunk by Brendan Lipovsky (SR/Fairfield, NE) with 15:21 left in the first.
After big three-pointer by Bart Hiscock (SR/Bennington, NE) and a bucket from Zach Kitten (SR/Hastings, NE), the Broncos found themselves up by eight leading 21-13.
The Broncos were able to push the lead to ten after back-to-back free throws by Lipovsky and 2-pointer by Shane Chamberlain (SO/Harlan, IA) to extend the Broncos lead 34-24.
As Friends tried cutting into the Broncos lead, Hiscock was able to keep extending the Broncos lead with a bucket with :40 on the clock and another big three with only :11 left in the half. The Broncos take a 13-point 47-34 lead into half.
Coming right out of half the Broncos were able to keep the momentum going as they go on an 8-point run with a three form Logan Cale (SR/Lincoln, NE), an under the basket from Evan Tricker (SO/Naples, FL), and another three from Hiscock to put the Broncos up by 21 with 18:27 to go.
Friends again had some luck cutting into the lead but the Broncos were able to fight back and extended their lead to 25 points with 10:57 remaining in the half.
The Broncos were able to keep the lead at 25 with 7:38 remaining before Friends switched up their defense and went into a full court press. Once the Falcons made this change the Broncos couldn't find a way to score, as they were able to cut the lead down to 12 with only 1:21 left in the game. The change in defense came too late as the Broncos were able to hang on for the win, winning 87-76.
Hiscock led the way for the Broncos scoring 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting with 3-5 from behind the three-point line. Hiscock also picked up his first double-double of the season as he also led the team with 13 rebounds. Tricker also finished the game with his first double-double as a Bronco, as he scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 11 rebounds of his own.
Friends finished the game shooting 38 percent to 56 percent for the Broncos while the Broncos won the rebounding battle 43-to-33.
Hastings improves to 1-0 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 26 taking on Dakota State University with tip-off set for 4:00 p.m. here at Lynn Farrell Arena.
