HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - For the first time in St. Cecilia school history, its softball team is in the State Softball Tournament at the Bill Smith Softball Complex. It is only the Hawkettes' second year of existence, but head coach Ryan Ohnoutka knew what this team was capable of early on.
"I knew we had the parts to do it when we first started, before our inaugural season but this is pretty cool to be out here playing in the state tournament, in our second year program," Ohnoutka said. "We're such a young group. We got five sophomores out there. We got one junior and just one senior. They've just taken an approach that they must get better every single day in practice."
St. Cecilia only has two upperclassmen on its roster, one of which is senior Natalie Kissinger.
"We are led by our senior Natalie Kissinger and Natalie is a special girl. She's grown up competing all of her life in sports," Ohnoutka said. "She's just an awesome girl and she has just done a great job of leading this young team."
Kissinger finished the regular season with a 2.07 ERA (21-6) and a .614 batting average, both led the team.
The Hawkettes play Oct. 17 against Auburn where they are looking for its first ever State Softball win.
