KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Kearney and Grand Island football will meet each other Week 1 like they do every year. Both the Bearcats and the Islanders were the Class A state runners-up the last two seasons, Kearney in 2017 and Grand Island in 2018.

"When you talk about Grand Island you talk about a tremendous football program. I think Jeff Tomlin is one of the best in the state when it comes to class A coaches," Kearney Coach Brandon Cool said. "For us the rivalry and the opportunity for us to get to play those guys we look forward to that every year."
For decades the Interstate 80 rivalry has grown in Central Nebraska. For the cities involved, it means a lot.
"Definitely fun, they have an excellent program and they've always had one," Grand Island coach Jeff Tomlin said. "It's a great way to start the year and get both communities involved and both student bodies and its a great motivator for the summer."
The Bearcats and Islanders take the field Friday night, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
