HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College volleyball team put up a good fight in the first two sets against No. 1 Northwestern but ended up falling in straight sets 25-17, 25-20, 25-13 on senior day insinde Lynn Farrell Arena.
In set one, Hastings was going toe-to-toe with the Red Raiders fighting to a 10-10 tie until an 11-2 run hoisted Northwestern out to a 21-12 lead en route to the 25-17 set one victory.
Set two saw NWIC jump out to an 18-10 lead before the Lady Broncos found some momentum starting with a kill from Ally Ginkens (SR/Mullen, NE). A kill from Lucy Skoch (JR/Hastings, NE) followed by a service ace from Cassidy Ostrand (SR/Central City, NE) cut the deficit to 18-13.
Northwestern would follow suit with Anna Wedel to make it 19-13 but Hastings came right back with kills from Claire Vanderbeek (FR/Kearney, NE) and Skoch plus a block from the duo bringing HC to within three at 19-16 prompting a timeout from the Red Raiders.
But that would be as close as Hastings would get dropping set two 25-20.
Hastings would manage to take a brief 5-4 lead in set three before Northwestern began to show its might out scoring the Lady Broncos 21-8 the rest of the way.
Unfortunately, this loss has officiall eliminated Hastings from the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament as HC is two games back of eighth place with just one game remaining.
Skoch led the way with eight kills and hitting .250. Ginkens added seven kills while Vanderbeek had a solid game with five kills while hitting .333. Wedel led all attackers with 14 kills.
Jaisee Stinson (FR/Omaha, NE) and Claira Thede (JR/St. Paul, NE) combined for 25 assists in the loss.
Hastings falls to 10-15 (5-10) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Nov. 6 hitting the road to take on Mount Marty with first serve set for 7:30 p.m. in Yankton, SD.
