Hastings College women's basketball wins sixth straight

HASTINGS, Neb - The Hastings College women's basketball team fought tooth and nail with the Briar Cliff Chargers, but it was the Broncos who got the season series sweep with a 72-55 victory over the Chargers on Saturday at Lynn Farrell Arena.

In the first quarter, the Broncos (16-10, 11-8 GPAC) and the Chargers went back and forth with the Chargers taking the first lead of the game, but the lead being exchanged five times throughtout the quarter to a Emma Grenfell (JR/York, NE) layup that gave the Broncos a 16-15 lead after the first quarter.

Neither team was able to break away for the better part of the second quarter which led to a 24-24 tie at the 3:36 point of the second quarter.

With 3:14 left in the half, Mackenzie Willicott got a key 3-pointer that started an 8-0 run that also contained a 3-pointer from Emma Grenfell and a pair of Shandra Farmer (JR/Hastings, NE) free throws. This propelled the Broncos to their eventual 32-26 halftime lead.

After a basket from each team, the Broncos were able to go on another 8-0 run from a field goal by Grasso and a pair of three-pointers from Farmer and Sophia Pankratz (JR/Hastings, NE). For almost all of the final 7:27, the Broncos held onto a double-digit lead, including the 55-43 lead at the end of the third quarter.

For the final 10 minutes, the Broncos took control, never leading by less than nine and getting ahead of the Chargers by a game-high 19 points after a 6-0 run in the final two minutes.

Leading the Broncos was Farmer with a game-high 19 points and team-high four rebounds. Grasso and Kaitlyn Schmit (SO/Omaha, NE) also were in double-digits for scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Next for the Broncos is an off-day on Wednesday before going to Orange City, Iowa, on Saturday to take on the No. 2 Northwestern Red Raiders who are fresh off an 81-75 upset of No. 1 Concordia. That game will be at 2 p.m. CST.
