Hastings, NE -- The Hastings College volleyball team defeated Concordia 25-21, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20 on Thursday night in Lynn Farrell Arena.
After splitting the first two sets, Hastings and Concordia were in a tight battle in set three with the Broncos holding a 16-14 edge. An attack error followed by a Lucy Skoch (SO/Hastings, NE) kill pushed that lead to four at 18-14 which forced a Bulldog timeout.
Clare Hamburger (SR/Hastings, NE) came right out of the timeout with a service ace as Hastings took command of set three.
Now leading 19-16, Hamburger once again found Skoch on the outside for a kill followed by an attack error by Concordia's Kara Stark. Then Hamburger and Skoch teamed up once again to make it 22-17.
Concordia would not make things easy though fighting back to make it 23-22 following an attack error by the Broncos.
Hastings would regroup though as Hamburger found Casey Krolikowski (SR/Cairo, NE) for the kill and on set point, Stark missed on her attack attempt as the Broncos came away with the 25-22 set three victory.
The Bulldogs looked strong to start the fourth set jumping out to a 7-2 lead but a kill from Krolikowski following a Bronco timeout cooled things down.
With Concordia leading 9-6, the Broncos would really begin to catch fire as Hamburger got things rolling with a pass out to Krolikowski for the kill. Emily Lenners (JR/Adams, NE) and Skoch teamed up for a block to make it 9-7.
Hastings kept up the pressure as Hamburger would find Ally Ginkens (JR/Mullen, NE) for the kill followed by a service ace from Rielyn Hoffman (SR/Chandler, AZ) to make it 9-9 forcing a Concordia timeout.
The timeout did little to slow the momentum the Broncos had gained as Skoch and Lenners teamed up again for another block followed by a Ginkens and Lenners block to make it 11-9. Lenners then did it all by her self with a solo block on the Morgan Nibbe attack attempt forcing yet another CUNE timeout with Hastings leading 12-9.
The Broncos would maintain its two to three point margin until Hoffman recorded yet another service ace to make it 20-16. Then Hamburger fooled the Bulldog defense with a kill of her own. Following an attack error from Concordia, Hoffman picked up yet another service ace to make it 22-16.
Concordia would get to within four but then Lenners finished the match with a kill as Hastings took this match in four sets.
Hastings finished with match with nine blocks but had five of them in set four. Skoch led the way with 12 kills while Lenners and Krolikowski added nine kills and Matti Dabovich (SR/Pueblo West, CO) and Sage Meyer (SR/Bellevue, NE) each had eight.
Claira Thede (SO/St. Paul, NE) led everyone with four service aces while Hoffman and Hamburger each had two. Thede also added 25 assists while Hamburger finished with 22. Hastings held the advantage in service aces at 9-3.
Hastings finished the match hitting .194 while Concordia hit just .168.
Stark led the way for Concordia with 11 kills.
