KEARNEY, Neb (KSNB) - “Coach Wegner will bring a wealth of coaching experience to the Lady Bearcat Softball program,” stated Ryan Hogue, KHS Activities Director. Hogue believes that Coach Wegner and her staff will continue where Coach Shepherd and his staff left off and teach our athletes the fundamentals, work ethic and competitiveness needed to achieve success in the Heartland Activity Conference and Class A. “The girls made some great strides last season to improve as individual softball players and as a Team,” Hogue stated. “With Coach Wegner taking the Interim Head Coaching position, I believe the 2019 Bearcat Softball Team will have the opportunity to compete with everyone on our schedule."

Kearney High names Barbara Wegner its Interim Head Softball Coach

Barbara played softball at Grand Island Senior High School when it was a co-op among GICC, GINW, and GISH. She went on to play college softball at Wayne State College where she was a pitcher and infielder. Coach Wegner was the head softball coach at GISH for 6 years and took the Islanders to state for the first time in the history of the program. She also started the Explosions/Scorpions program as well as the Stingers summer program in GI. Barbara will be entering her 10th year as an educator for Kearney Public Schools.

"Kearney High School is loaded with talented softball players, and I am honored to get to work with these fine young ladies. I am looking forward to not only helping them develop their skills, but build grit both on and off the field." Barbara Wegner
