Hastings, NE -- The Hastings College women's basketball team was looking for a complete game and finally got one to open Great Plains Athletic Conference action by defeating Doane 90-47 Wednesday night in Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Broncos limited the Tigers to just 34 percent shooting while forcing 31 turnovers. Hastings shot 45 percent from the floor while picking up a season high 19 steals. Emma Grenfell (JR/York, NE) led the way with four of those steals.
Hastings opened up a big lead early as Taylor Beacom (FR/Papillion, NE) got things going with a bucket to make it 6-2. Then following a Gabby Grasso (JR/Omaha, NE) free throw, Harper Sheets (SR/Greeley, CO) got in the act with a bucket off a Tiger turnover to make it 9-2. Beacom and Grenfell then went back-to-back buckets pushing the lead to 14-2 after Grenfell finished off her 3-point play.
Hastings wasn't done increasing its lead to 22-4 at the end of the first quarter when Shandra Farmer (JR/Hastings, NE) connected on a layup to end the frame.
Doane never really recovered as the Broncos built the lead to as many as 47 points before taking the win by 43.
Farmer had her best game of this young season scoring 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting while recording three steals. Grenfell finished in double figures with 12 points on 3-for-5 shooting. Mackenzie Willicott (SR/Blue Hill, NE), Halle Plumbtree (SO/Fullerton, NE) and Sheets each finished with nine points.
Hastings also won the rebounding battle 40-to-35.
Hastings improves to 2-1 (1-0) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Nov. 10 as Mount Marty comes to town with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m. in Lynn Farrell Arena.
