Lady Broncos improve to 13-0, crush #6 Dordt 88-69

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College women's basketball team were able to pick up a big conference win at home on Saturday, as the Lady Broncos took down No. 6 Dordt Defenders 88-69.

The 4th ranked Lady Broncos found themselves in a dogfight early on with the Defenders. Halfway through the first quarter, as Kaitlyn Schmidt would drain a 3-pointer to give the Lady Broncos a 11-10 lead with just 6:24 left in the quarter. With 1:22 left in the quarter, the Lady Broncos would find themselves down 18-16 to Dordt before Ali Smith (SO/Ord, NE) would start a nice 7-0 run to end the quarter with a 3-pointer of her own. Back-to-back baskets by Shandra Farmer (SR/Hastings, NE) would give the Lady Broncos an 23-18 lead at the end of the quarter.

After the start of the second quarter, the Defenders would do their best to keep up with the Lady Broncos fast paced offense. The Defenders would take the lead just for a little bit, with 5:38 left in the half, Dordt would drain a 3-pointer to take a 29-28 lead over the Lady Broncos. Hastings would continue to fight and regain control of the game as Gabby Grasso (SR/Omaha, NE) was able to push the lead up to 6 after her basket gave the Lady Broncos a 40-34 lead. A 3-pointer by Schmit with just :22 second left would give the Lady Broncos 10 point 46-36 lead as the teams would head into halftime.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Broncos would keep up with their fast-paced attack as they would work to push their lead on the Defenders. Halfway through the third quarter, the Lady Broncos would put together a quick 6-to-o run with baskets coming from Sophia Pankratz (SR/Hastings, NE), Taylor Beacom (SO/Papillion, NE), and Farmer would give the Lady Broncos their biggest lead of the game as they would lead 64-47 with 4:04 left in the quarter. The Defenders would fight back and cut into the Lady Broncos lead as they went into the final quarter of the game trailing the Lady Broncos 70-59.

The Lady Broncos defense would continue to protect the lead as the offense keep working to increase the lead. Farmer would give the Lady Broncos a 17-point lead with a 3-pointer with 2:58 left in the game. Another 3-pointer by Schmit would give Hastings an 88-68 lead with just :56 seconds left in the game. The Lady Broncos lead would be too much for the Defenders to overcome as they would take game by a final score of 88-69.

Hastings had four Lady Broncos score in double figures led by Farmer's almost double-double action with 17 points and a career high 9 assists. Grasso would also finish with 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting while also picking up career high 5 blocks in the game. Smith have a career day as she picked up a career high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and also career high made three pointers as she went 4-for-5 behind the arc. Smith would also lead the Lady Broncos with 6 steals. Schmit would finish with 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting going 3-for-5 behind the arc.

Hastings finished the game shooting just over 49 percent from the floor while Dordt would shoot 46 percent. The Defenders would out rebound the Lady Broncos 36-to-26.

The Lady Broncos would also win the turnover battle, as they forced Dordt to turn over the ball 32 times compared to their own 13.

Hastings is now 13-0 (7-0) on the year and will be back in action next Wednesday Dec. 18 as the Lady Broncos travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida as they take part in the Cruzin Classic taking on No. 10 Saint Xavier University with tip-off set for 9:30 a.m. CST
