Lady Broncos improve to 22-0 with 78-54 win over Briar Cliff
The Hastings College women's basketball team continues to shine as they take care of the Briar Cliff Chargers 78-54 on Saturday afternoon. This win ties the longest win streak in Hastings school history with 22 straight wins. This win streak goes all the way back 1992-93 team.
The No. 2 Ranked Lady Broncos found themselves in a tight one as the game got underway only leading by one after a basket by Taylor Beacom (SO/Papillion, NE) gave them the 9-8 lead halfway through the first. On the next possession Shandra Farmer (SR/Hastings, NE) would drain a three-pointer to help spark a 12—0 run that would be capped off with a pair of free throws by Emma Grenfell (SR/York, NE) to give HC a 19-8 lead with 1:25 left in the quarter. A late basket by the Chargers would give HC a 19-13 lead at the end of the quarter.
Dominant is the only word to describe the Lady Broncos defense as they only allowed one single point from the Chargers in the second quarter. Farmer would get things going with a three-pointer and next play teammate Kelsie Zadina (SO/Seward, NE) would also drain a three to boost the lead to double digits. Briar Cliffs only point of the quarter would come at the 2:58 mark when Konnor Sudmann would go one for two at the free throw line. Sophia Pankratz (SR/Hastings, NE) would score the final basket before half, she would drain a three-pointer to give her team a 36-14 lead going into the half.
The Chargers would continue to have turnover trouble in the second half, as they tried to keep up with the Lady Broncos fast offensive pace. With 5:09 left in the third, Karli Hale (SO/Holdrege, NE) would drive into the lane and score to give the Lady Broncos a 43-20. HC would continue to show their dominance inside the paint after an offensive rebound by Beacom led to her own quick score to extend the lead 49-29 with 1:32 left. Dawson Knode (FR/Haxtun, CO) would knock down a dagger of a three-pointer at the buzzer to give HC a 52-33 lead as they headed into the fourth and final quarter.
Hastings would keep padding their lead and stopping the Chargers on the defensive side of the ball as Farmer would drain a three to push the Lady Broncos lead to 67-45 with 4:52 left in the game. After a steal by Grenfell, she would drive to the paint for a fast break basket to extend the lead 78-50. A timeout would be called at the two-minute mark and Head Coach Jina Douglas would finally pull off the dogs up 28. Briar Cliff would score a couple pairs of free-throws before falling 78-54.
Hastings had three players score in double figures led by Beacom's 19 points, on 7-for-15 shooting including going 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Schmit would finish with 15 points on 7-for-14 from the field while Pankratz added 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Farmer would add 9 points, with all baskets coming from behind the three-point line. She also led the team in steals with four. Knode had eight point on 3-for-4 shooting and would lead the team with seven rebounds, six of those coming from offensive side.
