After a slow start, the No. 2 Ranked Lady Broncos were able to pull ahead and take care of No. 17 Northwestern College 78-66 on Saturday afternoon.

Hastings found themselves down 8-2 to start off the game before Shandra Farmer (SR/Hastings, NE) would score seven straight points including a 3-pointer to give her team back the lead. From there, both teams would battle and try to gain the advantage on the other as both teams would go back in forth all the way to the end of the quarter. A pair of free throws from the Red Raiders would tie the game for the fifth time in the quarter at 22-22

Starting the second quarter, Northwestern would quickly build the lead to five, as Hastings was unable to find the momentum needed to take the lead or even tie the game until the 1:58 mark when Emma Grenfell (SR/York, NE) drained a three-pointer to give her team the 37-36 lead. It looked like the Lady Broncos were going to be able to take the lead into halftime but a steal by Northwestern with just :03 seconds left would lead to an open basket. Hastings would go into the half trailing 40-39.

Gabby Grasso (SR/Omaha, NE), who is returning back to action after missing last the game, would get things going for the Lady Broncos out of the half as she would score on a layup and a pair of free throws to regain the lead. A 3-pointer form Kaitlyn Schmit (JR/Omaha, NE) would extend the lead to seven with just under five minutes in the third quarter. After another turnover by HC in the final seconds of the quarter, Northwestern would sink a basket at the buzzer to head into the final quarter trailing 60-54.

Schmit would open up the fourth quarter with a dagger of a 3-pointer to boost the Lady Bronco lead to nine. Farmer would drain a 3-pointer to push the lead to double-digits and Grasso would have a big block on the Red Raiders next possession. Hastings was able to push the lead all the way up to 14 points. Northwestern would drain a three with :15 second left in the game, as they would make the final shot with :15 or less time on the clock in all four quarters including two at the buzzer. The Lady Broncos take the game 82-71 over NWC.

The Lady Broncos excelled defensively holding the Red Raiders, who were averaging 82.4 ppg, to just under that, allowing 71 points. HC forced the NWC to commit 18 turnovers and held them to 39.0 percent from the field. Hastings would shoot 43.3% from the floor on the afternoon. The Lady Broncos picked up nine steals as well, with Grenfell leading the team with five steals on the day.

Farmer would have herself a day as she led the Lady Broncos and tied a career high 30 points, five rebounds, and three assists on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor, four of those coming from behind the arc, and 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Sophia Pankratz (SR/Hastings, NE) had 11 points of her own while adding team high nine rebounds. Schmit added 10 points on 3-for-7 from the field. Grenfell and Grasso would add eight points from each of them.

Hastings improves to 24-0 (16-0) and will back in action Wednesday February 5th against College of Saint Mary on the road in Omaha, Neb with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CT.
