HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hastings College women's basketball team continued to dominate as they took down Peru State by a score of 87-60.
The 16th ranked Lady Broncos found themselves down 4-1 early in the first before Kaitlyn Schmit (JR/Omaha, NE) would drive to the paint, score, and pick up the foul which sparked a 7-0 run by the Lady Broncos.
The Bobcats did their best to keep the score close with the Lady Broncos but after a basket by Taylor Beacom (SO/Papillion, NE) and Shandra Farmer (SR/Hastings, NE) the Lady Broncos led by 8 with 1:03 left in the first quarter. With only 6 seconds left on the clock Farmer was able to find the basket to stretch the Lady Bronco lead 23-15 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bobcats continue to struggle in the second quarter keeping up with the Lady Broncos fast offensive pace. Farmer would hit the only three of the half for the Lady Broncos with 8:24 to increase the lead to 11. The Lady Bronco would show their dominance inside the paint after a defensive rebound by Sophia Pankratz (SR/Hastings, NE) led to a quick score to extend the lead 36-21 with 6:07 left.
Hastings would keep padding their lead and stopping the Bobcats defensively as Farmer again hit a last second basket to take the Lady Broncos into half with a 48-29 lead.
Hastings shot lights out in the first half connecting on 22-of-43 shots (51.2%) while holding Peru State to just 37 percent shooting. As mentioned, the Lady Broncos continued to dominate the paint as they racked up 40 points inside the paint compared to Peru States 12.
The Lady Broncos then erupted in the third quarter going on a quick 10-0 run to push the score to 59-29 with over six minutes remaining in the quarter. Hastings would continue to shine on the court as they entered the fourth leading 66-38.
Hastings would build the lead to 30 points before calling the dogs off midway through the fourth quarter.
The Lady Broncos had four players score in double figures led by Farmer's 20 points, 6 assist, and 5 boards. Schmit finished with 13 points with 7 rebounds of her own, Beacom added 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting and Pankratz finished with 11 points.
Hastings finished the game shooting 46 percent from the floor while Peru State struggled shooting just 33 percent.
Peru State won the rebounding battle 39-to-36 after leading at half 23-15.
Hastings is now 2-0 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Nov. 2 as Kansas Wesleyan comes to town with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. in Lynn Farrell Arena.
