Second-ranked Broncos match win total from last season, improve to 20-0
The 2nd ranked Hastings College Lady Broncos improved to 20-0 with an 82-62 home win over Mount Marty on Sunday afternoon.
Lady Bronco duo Emma Grenfell (SR/York, NE) and Sophia Pankratz (SR/Hastings, NE) both led the team with 16 points each. Grenfell connected 6-of-9 shots from the field and just came up short on surpassing her career high of 18 points. Pankratz would have herself a day as she picked up her second double-double on the season as she goes 5-of-8 from the field while picking up 10 rebounds, four steals and two blocks as well on the day. Shandra Farmer (SR/Hastings, NE) went 5-for-10 on the field adding 13 points. Gabby Grasso (SR/Omaha, NE) would add 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting and picked up six rebounds. Ali Smith (SO/Ord, NE) would come off the bench and added nine.
Hastings came into the contest ranked No. 3 in the nation in turnover margin (10.3/game). The Lady Broncos committed only eight turnovers, while forcing the Lancers in to 17 miscues.
The Lady Broncos struggled to shoot the ball well in the first half after opening up the first quarter 7-2 before the Lancers were able tie the game and go back and forth all the way till the end of the quarter. Hastings would end up only shoot 27.8% from the field.
Hastings would see the shooting struggles continue in the second quarter. Grenfell would open up the quarter taking advantage of and-one opportunity and then coming right back and drills a three-pointer to give HC an 21-14 lead. Mount Marty would storm back and tie the game at 29-29 with just under a minute before halftime. Baskets by Grasso and Grenfell would give the Lady Broncos an33-29 lead as the second quarter comes to an end.
Opening up the second half, the Lady Broncos were able to turn an 37-34 lead in 51-34 after scoring 14-unanwsered points with the help from multiple shooters. Hastings would end up taking 17-point lead into the final quarter after improving their shooting percentage up to 41.5%.
The Lady Broncos lead eventually ballooned to 24 points at 70-46 on a basket from Farmer with 6:52 to play in the game to polish off an 10-3 run. Mount Marty would fight back and would cut the lead to 15 with 3:12 left in the second half. The Lady Broncos would quickly respond as Ali Smith would finish off a three-point play that would spark a 7-to-2 run to finish out the game.
Hastings would go on to take the game 82-62 over the Lancers.
Hastings will return to the floor on Jan. 22 when they travel to Mitchell, SD to take on No. 12 Dakota Wesleyan University with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. CT.
