Area Students Learn About Careers in Construction

HASTINGS, Neb. -- More than 100 students attended Central Community College, Hastings Construction Career day to get hands on experience and learn about the construction business.

The students got to chance to explore everything from building design to concrete.

"I think all the different careers will surprise people. When people think about concrete they only think about the guys that are placing and finishing the concrete, when there's a whole array of careers just in our industry," said Jereme Montgomery of the Nebraska Concrete Aggregates Association.

Montgomery's station taught students about placing and finishing concrete.

CCC Hastings President, Bill Hitesman said "the push is really coming from a lot of contractors, a lot of people that are needing young people to come into the work force."

Scott Haag, the director of talent acquisition at Nebraska Machinery, NMC, said he could not agree more.

"To help us with that skill shortage it's important to us to have individuals that are available so from a investment perspective it's sort of a no brainer if you will," Haag said.

Instructors at the event say even if the students don't choose a career in construction, they hope the students walked away from the event learning about new possibilities and that hard work pays off.
