Alliance man in court Monday to enter plea in attempted murder case

ALLIANCE, Neb. - (KNEP) - An Alliance man appears in court Monday while facing attempted first degree murder and arson charges.

According to the affidavit, Cornell Belt allegedly became irate after a night of drinking on Christmas Eve. When he arrived at a home in the 700 block of East 9th Street, he allegedly set fire to the top of the staircase which traveled down to the basement in an attempt to barricade the individual down there.

Later on its alleged Belt tried to move the gas stove away from the wall in possibly an attempt to break the gas line. Another individual stepped in to stop him at which point Belt allegedly shouted he would kill them.

The affidavit reports Belt told police during an interview he would have killed both of the two in the home if he had a firearm.

Belt is facing attempted first degree murder, first degree arson, terroristic threats, child abuse and domestic assault.
