GERING, Neb. - (KNEP) - Firefighter Ministries helped 14 individuals who were displaced after a Monday afternoon fire in Gering.

Gering Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nathan Flowers states the call came in at 2:20 pm for an apartment complex fire in the 1700 block of 6th Street.

When crews arrived, the entire backside of the building was engulfed in flames. In total, six apartments were affected with one that Flowers considers uninhabitable. He added the damage was contained to mainly two apartments with all six receiving at least water damage.

Flowers stated because fire reached the attic, his crew and Scottsbluff Fire had to put a hole through the ceiling of one of the apartments to battle the flames.

During the fire, Gering Police blocked off R Street from 5th to 7th and was only letting residents who live on 6th street between Q Street and R Street on to the road.

Everyone was able to get out, but two cats perished as a result. It took nearly four hours for crews to battle the fire. An investigation into the cause remains ongoing.
