These stands are available to anyone in the community. The original intent was to have four but thanks to the Scottsbluff School District, six are available. Locations include Westmoor Pool on 27th Street and Lakota Lutheran Center in Scottsbluff as well as the McLellan Park, Hampton Park and Johannes Park in Gering.

Rotary Club’s Megan Hayward stated they looked at other communities and have seen many flourish from them. Community members can head to any location and pick up a book of their choosing and take it home. Community members can also leave books they do not want any more inside and allow others to experience the joy of that book.

Noelle Thompson of Lied Scottsbluff Public Library said they want to provide opportunities for literacy in the community. Both she and Diane Downer of Gering Public Library feel sometimes it is difficult to get to a library.

To decide locations in Scottsbluff, they looked at most frequent bus stops and looked at a one mile radius around the library. Thompson stated they understand it can be hard to find transportation from time to time.

Gering Public Library looked at the main streets used to get to the library and is placing a few in areas so people don’t have to cross busy streets.

The cities are responsible for maintaining them but all involved believe spreading the awareness of literacy is paramount.
