Heavy police presence on West 23rd Street placed local school in lockout

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. UPDATE:

Lincoln Heights Elementary was on a lockout for about an hour. The lockout has officially been lifted. The cause is unknown at this time. (Brian Sherrod, KNEP)

Scottsbluff Police detail a Gering officer went to a home in the 200 block of West 23rd Street in Scottsbluff to follow-up on a theft investigation. Upon arriving, the officer witnessed a disturbance occurring with one of the people inside mentioning a firearm.

Several people exited the home soon after stating a female inside was armed with a handgun. Scottsbluff Police and negotiators arrived on scene where they were able to make contact with a female whom was hiding in a room of the house.

Negotiators were able to de-escalate the situation which ended with the female surrendering to police. She was taken to Regional West Medical Center for treatment.

A further investigation is ongoing in the matter.

With heavy police presence on West 23rd Street a little after 12:00pm, Lincoln Heights Elementary was on a lockout for about an hour.

As of now, the lockout has just been lifted at the elementary school.

The cause of the lockout is unknown at this time.
