Knowing where to go and what to do during a tornado

If a tornado strikes and you are outdoors, get to the nearest tornado shelter. If you are inside, get to the lowest level. If you are driving, get out of your car and get into the nearest ditch. (Brian Sherrod, KNEP)

PANHANDLE, Neb. In the last few weeks, the Midwest has been impacted by several tornadoes across multiple states.

If a tornado touches down in the Panhandle, do you know what to do and where to go?

With where to go, there are multiple businesses, churches and basements you can visit if you happen to be outdoors.

Most businesses are considered tornado shelters during business hours.

If you need to use them when they may not be open, you should call the business directly.

If you are inside of your home or a business, there are things you should always remember.

“Remember the word duck,” said Tim Newman, Director of Emergency Management. “Go down to the lowest level under something sturdy, cover your head and keep in shelter until danger is passed.”

Families should always have a severe weather and evacuation plan.

“You can never predict when a tornado is going to hit a particular spot,” said Newman. “It’s like throwing a dart at a map so you just have to prepare just in case that dart hits you this time.”

If you happen to be traveling on a roadway, you have a separate set of rules to follow.

“Don’t stay in a vehicle if a tornado strike is imminent to you,” explained Newman. “You need to get out of your vehicle, get into a ditch and get below ground level. In case you do get hit by the tornado, debris will likely go over you instead of on top of you or knock you down.”
