Mumps spread easily through saliva.

The symptoms include low-grade fevers, headaches, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.

The most typical sign of illness is swelling of glands in the cheeks or below the jaw.

The illness lasts a week to 10 days in most cases.

There is no specific treatment for mumps but they ask patients to get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids.

These experts urge vaccination.
