Morrill County man admits to stealing from the veterans fund

MORRILL COUNTY, Neb. - (KNEP) - A former Veteran Services Officer took a plea deal after admitting to stealing funds intended for veterans.

According to court records, Devin Heumesser took over for Robert Erdman December of 2016. It wasn’t until January 2018 when Erdman was added as a board member that Heumesser put in his two week notice. Heumesser neglected to fulfill that notice and Erdman took over the position again.

During his analysis of recent records Erdman found much of the money taken out of the Veteran Services account intended for veterans was not going into their hands.

Heumesser originally denied taking $17,000 until last month when he entered a plea agreement to four counts of theft; all class 1 misdemeanors. The courts stipulate he must pay a total of $18,389.38 in restitution to the Morrill County Veterans Fund.

A sentencing date has been set by the courts for April 1st with Heumesser still held on 10% of $10,000.
