SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. In response to your question regarding the Settlement of Claim statement at the February Board of Education Meeting believed to be connected to the Michael Klein abuse case.

The settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing by or liability of the Scottsbluff Public Schools. Instead, all parties to the litigation wanted to avoid the costs, expenses and uncertainties of trial.

The former student’s name is not being released to protect the identity of the former student and her family. Scottsbluff Public Schools will endeavor to honor that privacy concern and cannot confirm or deny the relation of this settlement to any other settlements and/or litigation.

The payment amount believed to be $1.7 million will be paid by the school district’s risk liability pool, ALICAP. Scottsbluff Public Schools will not pay any amount of the settlement. This payment will have no fiscal impact on the Scottsbluff Public Schools' assets, budget or property tax levy.

Scottsbluff Public Schools continuously reviews and evaluates its policies, procedures and practices related to student safety, staff hiring and training, and compliance with law.
