LINCOLN, Neb. - (KNEP) - A push to rename Homestead National Monument moves another step closer after a unanimous vote.
A push to change the Homestead National Monument name moves forward
Third District Congressman Adrian Smith’s bill to rename the area as the National Historical Park passed the House Natural Resources Committee Wednesday.
Smith mentioned the Homestead Act of 1862 helped shape the American West and certainly Nebraska. He added the monument is a piece of American history memorializing the site of the first Homestead claim. However, he believes the current name doesn’t properly describe the sprawling area with the various exhibits it has.
The bill is being co-sponsored by Nebraska Representatives Jeff Fortenberry and Don Bacon.
Smith added the passage through the committee is important and he is looking forward to hopefully consider the bill before the full house.
