Union Bar offers free food to City personnel

GERING, Neb. To help city personnel and emergency responders who worked so hard during the winter storm, Union Bar and Grill in Gering decided to offer them free food.

Local lineman, police, fire, street crews and EMS services came to Union Bar and Grill for a bite to eat.

They mostly chowed down on burger and fries. Many even decided to have a beer.

The Owner says he is happy to help anyway that he can.

“I left my house about 4:30 this morning and the City had already been down my street,” said Scott Swanson, Owner of Union Bar and Grill. “I get down here, the streets are blown and pushed off. I thought to myself that there has been a bunch of people working all night long and I would like to thank them somehow.”

Swanson says it really means a lot to him that local crews are putting their lives at risk to help others.

“These guys worked all night long and it means a lot to me to be able to do it,” said Swanson. “I am sure that there is a lot of other people in Gering that feel the same way. I know they would like to do something for them, too.”

The City worked to keep everyone safe by providing power, helping stranded cars and plowing the streets.

Swanson says if you do not need to travel anywhere, stay indoors.

“I wouldn’t be out if I didn’t have four wheel drive right now,” said Swanson. “I’ve seen multiple cars stuck all over town. Main reason we are open is for the people that live pretty close to the Union.”

The Union Bar and Grill will be open until 1:00am.
