GERING, Neb (KNEP) The Red Cross is helping a family of four that lost their home in a fire this morning. Linda Gonzales, her daughter, and two granddaughters rented a home on Woodley Park Rd. near Terrytown.

Linda told investigators that her furnace had been out, and she woke later to the smell of smoke and got everyone up. The family’s three pets also escaped.

Scottsbluff Rural Fire Captain Paul Reisig, said they arrived 12:30 am and battled the fire for 5 hours with 3 vehicles and 8 firefighters. Scottsbluff fire was already on the scene and had smothered some of the blaze.

The roof was weak, and as firefighters were thinking it was almost over, the fire re-kindled and the roof collapsed. Captain Reisig figures the inside damage will take at least $10,000 to repair… maybe $25,000 in total. The owner of the home was on scene with an appraiser, and is waiting to see what damage has been done. He preferred not to make a comment.

Captain Reisig said there were no injuries and that the State Fire Marshall ruled it an electrical fire.
