Five Star Performer - Jarrett Synek
Quarterback Jarrett Synek is Local 4′s Five Star Performer after rushing for three touchdowns in blowout win over Seward.
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Hastings quarterback Jarrett Synek is well known for his ability to throw a football. Last season he set the Class B record for passing touchdowns in a game, throwing nine against Beatrice but last Friday against Seward he showed out on the ground rushing for 100 yards and three touchdowns.
“I was just making my reads and when I made my reads right it just opened up and they let me run forever basically," Synek said.
It is no secret the Tigers like to throw the football. Through five games, Synek has thrown for 1,265 yards and 18 touchdowns. However, head coach Charlie Shoemaker knew he would have to add something to the offense down the stretch.
“We knew as we got later in the year that he would play an integral part of our rushing game," Shoemaker said. "That just opens things up for everybody. You know its going to open things up for our running backs as we get going down the stretch.”
Not only are Synek and the offense clicking but the defense has been stout, shutting out opponents in back to back weeks and only allowing four touchdowns all season.
Given how competitive Class B is Hastings will need everything in its arsenal in hopes of playing at Memorial Stadium in November.
“You see all these playoff teams, like Skutt, Scottsbluff, Waverly all these teams last year that ended up beating us, they all ran the ball extremely well, along with throwing the ball,” Synek said. "So, at some point we’re going to have to be able to run the ball and I feel like that was step forward being able to run the ball last week.”
Tougher competition and cold autumn winds are coming for the top-ranked Tigers and they know they will need to be ready for when it does.
