HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Nebraska Department of Transportation’s contractor, IES Commercial, Inc., began working on the traffic signal at Burlington Avenue and 16th Street that was out of service on March 11 and finished putting the signals in temporary flash mode on Tuesday.

The intersection was upgraded with all new signal cable, a new controller, radio antenna for interconnect and radar vehicle detection. New traffic signal poles were installed in the southwest and northeast quadrants of the intersection to accommodate longer arms and new signal heads with flashing yellow arrows for left turning traffic on Burlington Avenue.

On Thursday, NDOT Traffic Signal engineers programmed the controller and took the signals from flash mode to normal operation. Now that the signals are operating normally, the construction signs, barricades and cones were removed to fully open the intersection.

The contractor is now working on the intersection of North Shore Drive to pour the concrete foundation for a new traffic signal pole in the northeast quadrant of the intersection. The traffic signals at the North Shore Drive intersection will be taken out-of-service on Monday, April 8. While the traffic signals are offline, North Shore Drive will remain open, but will be closed to the highway and there will be no left turning allowed for traffic on the highway.

The new traffic signal pole will accommodate a longer mast arm with a signal head for northbound left turning traffic. When the intersection traffic signal upgrade is completed, motorists on U.S. Hwy 34/281 at North Shore Drive will have flashing yellow left turn arrows. The project is also replacing all of the signal cable, installing a new controller, and adding antennas for interconnect.
