HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Here are the four stories you need to know for September 19, 2025.

Lockdown lifted

Gibbon Public Schools has announced that there will be a law enforcement presence for Friday following the schools going into a secure mode on Thursday. “We want parents and guardians to feel comfortable sending their children to school,” superintendent Vern Fisher posted on the schools’ Facebook page. “As a sign of support for those concerns, we will have a police presence on campus the entire day. ”

We’re still working to learn more about what led to Gibbon Public Schools to declare the SECURE mode on Thursday afternoon. Our reporter on scene found a Buffalo County Sheriff’s vehicle outside the school when he arrived around 2:50 p.m.

Voter data

The Trump Administration has formally requested Nebraska’s complete voter registration data under the National Voter Registration Act.

In a letter sent to to Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen, the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division requested “the registrant’s full name, date of birth, residential address, his or her state driver’s license number or the last four digits of the registrant’s social security number.”

The letter gives the Evnen 14 days to send the data over. The letter was dated September 8, which means that the Justice Department expects the data to be sent via encrypted email by September 22, Monday.

Looming shutdown

The federal government will run out of money on September 30, which means that Congress must pass a new spending bill. According to Speaker Mike Johnson, the house is poised to pass the republican spending bill that they say only increases spending for lawmaker security.

The senate is more divided, with neither the Republican or Democratic bill expected to pass. The Democrat’s budget bill undoes Medicaid cuts, enshrines Obamacare subsidies and reverses some of the DOGE cuts.

Your forecast

We’ll see another possible round of showers and thunderstorms on Friday afternoon into the evening. These will be centered in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas. Temperatures will stick in the 70s and move up into the 80s starting off next week.

That will be short lived, though. On Tuesday, a large cold front comes through and will bring chilly temperatures into the region with chances of showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be severe.
