New law will make shark attack alerts eligible for FCC emergency notifications
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNN) - A bill designed to help inform beachgoers about shark attacks is headed to President Trump’s desk for his signature.
The House approved the bipartisan measure known as Lulu’s Law on Wednesday.
The bill would allow state and local authorities to use wireless emergency alerts to send notifications about unsafe water conditions after a shark attack.
Shark attack warnings would be eligible for alerts transmitted through the Federal Communications Commission’s emergency notification system, much like severe weather alerts.
Lulu’s Law was inspired by Lulu Gribbin, an Alabama child who was bitten by a shark in June.
Lawmakers say another attack involving a different victim happened several miles away about an hour and a half before the attack on Lulu.
She and her family were at the U.S. Capitol to celebrate the bill’s passage.
