Former Kearney man sentenced for failing to register as sex offender
KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - A former Kearney man will spend a year behind bars for failing to register as a sex offender.
Paul Gray, 49, was sentenced Wednesday in federal court to a year in prison for failing to register as a sex offender. Additionally, Gray was sentenced to 6 months in prison for violating his supervised release. The two sentences were ordered to run consecutively. There is no parole in the federal system. After his release, he will begin a 10-year term of supervised release.
Gray is required to register as a sex offender as the result of a 1996 third degree sexual assault conviction out of Lincoln County as well as a federal 2008 production of child pornography conviction out of the District of Nebraska.
He was released from prison in 2022. After his release, Gray was ordered to reside at the Dismas Charities Reentry Center in Kearney and registered that address with the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry.
On July 17, Gray was dismissed from Dismas Charities. The United States Attorney Susan Lehr said Gray failed to update his Nebraska Sex Offender Registration and did not advise his United States Probation Officer of his whereabouts.
On Sept. 14, Gray was located at an apartment in Kearney where he had been staying since being dismissed from Dismas Charities.
This case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service.
