Grand Island’s Tattered Book launches fundraising campaign to expand community space
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Tattered Book, an independently owned used bookstore in Grand Island’s Railside District, is launching a community fundraising campaign with an initial goal of $50,000 to help preserve and expand the shop’s role as a hub for learning, creativity and community events.
The bookstore has served the Railside District since 2006 and owners say it has long focused on community service over profit by providing a welcoming space for readers and neighbors. The store also notes it was among the first buildings renovated to modern standards in the Railside District and has been part of the area’s revitalization.
The campaign is intended to help the business continue serving Grand Island while growing opportunities for community programming, partnerships and events.
“From the beginning, The Tattered Book has been a passion project focused on benefiting the community,” Frederic Graves said in a statement. “This campaign is about preserving that legacy while creating new opportunities for people to gather, learn, and connect.”
Store leaders say improvements will be completed incrementally as funds are raised, rather than waiting until the full goal is met.
According to the campaign, donations will be used for projects including:
- Updating bathrooms to improve accessibility and visitor experience
- Creating dedicated meeting and gathering spaces
- Adding fixtures and infrastructure to host private and community events
- Modernizing electrical systems
- Repairing and updating shelving
The long-term vision for the space includes expanding community uses such as workshops and classes, vendor pop-ups, creative events, comedy nights and open mic performances, author events, tabletop gaming nights, community meetings and nonprofit partnerships.
Supporters can contribute through direct donations via Venmo or by using the donation box inside the store, organizers said, noting direct donations help avoid processing fees.
